Cancer is a group of over one hundred diseases, characterized by abnormal uncontrolled cell-growth. In a healthy body, cells grow, die and are replaced in a very controlled way. Damage or change in the genetic material of cells by environmental or internal factors, sometimes results in cells that do not die and continue to multiply until a mass of cancer cells or a tumor develops. Most cancer-related deaths are due to metastasis. Malignant cells penetrate into the circulatory system and establish colonies in other parts of the body. Great advancements have been made, but cancer is still the leading cause of death for people under the age of eighty five. In the United States, one in every four people die from cancer.

がんとは、制御不能かつ異常な細胞増殖によって特徴づけられた病気の総称であり、１００種以上もある。細胞が成長し、死んでいくと、巧みに制御された方法によって置き換わっていくのが健康な体だ。一方、環境や内的要因によって遺伝子が損傷を受けたり、変異を起こした細胞は死滅することなく増え続け、がん細胞の塊すなわち腫瘍となるまで成長を続けていく。がん関連死は転移によるものがほとんどだ。がん細胞は血液循環系を侵襲し、他の臓器の中にコロニーすなわち転移巣を作る。がん治療において、多くの進歩が成し遂げられてきたが、85歳未満の死因の第１位は依然としてがんである。米国において、4人に1人はがんで死亡している。
